Do You Sometimes Question Your Own Worth?
If so, have you ever thought about where those feelings come from?
It turns out I'm not alone—roughly 85% of people worldwide struggle with low self-esteem, according to Psychology Today. I’ve faced my own battle with low self-esteem for decades.
This past weekend, I reunited with my cousin, who I grew up with. She was in town for a school reunion with her husband and two kids, so we decided to meet for lunch and catch up.
We both attended the same cram school during high school, and recently, we’ve been reflecting on just how toxic that environment was. The pressure to get into top universities was intense, and teachers often used fear to motivate us. I was called "dumb" more times than I can count, even labeled "mentally retarded." Sadly, I believed them.
At the time, I couldn’t process it properly. I was sleep-deprived from constant studying, and I was dealing with my mother’s depression and my parents’ discord. Even though I was attending the best high school in town, I spent the next twenty years believing I was stupid, hiding behind a fear that others would find out.
But over recent years, thanks to therapy, affirmations, journaling, and reflecting on great quotes, I’ve started to let go of that false belief. I’m far from perfect, but these days, I worry less about not measuring up.
We all have moments when we question our worth or struggle with self-confidence. Low self-esteem can make us feel small and disconnected from who we truly are. But building self-esteem is possible, and it starts with recognizing our inherent value. These quotes offer wisdom, comfort, and gentle reminders to embrace your unique worth and start believing in yourself again.
