“Nothing can bring you peace but yourself.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself." These words have resonated with me, though it took me years to understand their true meaning. I always believed peace came from external circumstances—achievements, success, or the approval of others. But over the past year, I've come to realize that peace doesn’t come from the outside. It’s something that must be cultivated from within.

Do you always feel peace?

According to Gallup’s research, part of the Wellbeing for Planet Earth Foundation and Gallup Initiative, only 28% of Americans “Always Feel at Peace.”

For a long time, feeling under stress was almost my default state. This feeling stretches back as far as I can remember, perhaps beginning in the 6th grade when I entered adolescence. My body was changing, my menstruation started, and I realized the discord between my parents. I also experienced bullying and felt the pressure of studying to get into an excellent high school.

At the time, I may have misinterpreted that stressful life as normal. On top of that, I believed that if I could only obtain or achieve certain things, I would finally find peace. If I could get into a good school, build a promising career, find a boyfriend or husband, I would feel at ease. Unfortunately, life had other plans. I didn’t get into the college I wanted. I felt lost in the middle of my textile design career. I eventually divorced my ex-husband. Each failure left me with lower self-esteem, and I felt I needed to do better the next time to make up for it.

Watching my son, who will turn four in October, was a turning point. I realized I didn’t want him to feel like he wasn’t enough or that he had to try hard to prove himself to others. That realization mirrored what I wanted for myself: to feel okay with who I am and simply accept who I am.

I’m still learning, but by gradually accepting who I am and what I can do, I’ve begun feeling a greater sense of peace. I hope to continue nurturing my inner peace to live more fully and authentically.
